Family Law Practice

As a family law attorney, Kaitlin assists clients through some of life’s most difficult and personal challenges. She has extensive experience guiding individuals through divorce, paternity actions, custody and parenting time disputes, child support, property division, and spousal maintenance (alimony).

In divorce cases, Kaitlin helps clients navigate the full range of issues that arise when a marriage ends, including equitable division of assets and debts, valuation of property and retirement accounts, and establishing or defending requests for spousal maintenance. She understands the emotional strain these cases place on families and provides steady guidance to help clients make informed decisions that protect both their rights and their future.

In paternity cases, Kaitlin represents both mothers and fathers in establishing legal parentage and securing custody, parenting time, and child support orders. She works to ensure that children’s best interests remain central while advocating for her clients’ parental rights.

Kaitlin also assists clients with modifications and enforcement of existing orders, including changes to custody, parenting time, and support obligations when circumstances shift. Child-in-Need-of-Care (CINC) Representation

Kaitlin also has extensive experience in Child-in-Need-of-Care (CINC) cases, where she represents parents, grandparents, and other interested parties in navigating the complex and often overwhelming process. Her background as a former criminal and CINC prosecutor enables her to offer comprehensive legal support, from working with the Department for Children and Families (DCF) to collaborating with social workers and advocating in court. Kaitlin also represents family members and foster parents seeking interested party status in CINC cases, ensuring that their voices are heard in decisions that impact children’s futures.

Most recently, Kaitlin successfully advocated for the Court to preserve a parent’s rights in a CINC case that had been ongoing for more than three years. Through careful preparation and vigorous advocacy, she was able to demonstrate the incompetence and errors of EmberHope and DCF, ultimately persuading the Court that termination of parental rights was not in the child’s best interests. This outcome underscores her persistence and her commitment to holding agencies accountable while securing just results for families in even the most difficult and long-standing cases.

Appellate Advocacy

Kaitlin’s legal expertise extends beyond the trial court to appellate work, where she assists clients in reviewing and challenging decisions made at the lower court level. Kaitlin’s experience in determining which issues to pursue on appeal and whether filing an appeal is appropriate is a crucial asset. She has drafted and filed numerous appellate briefs and has the distinction of presenting oral argument before the Kansas Supreme Court, an experience that underscores her skill as both a writer and an advocate. With time-sensitive deadlines in appeals, her prompt and thorough approach is key to providing effective appellate representation.

Passion for Small-Town Advocacy

While Kaitlin enjoys practicing in Sedgwick County, she has a deep passion for working in smaller counties like Harvey, Cowley, McPherson, and Marion. Her experience as a prosecutor in Harvey and Cowley Counties has given her a unique appreciation for the close-knit nature of these communities and the distinct dynamics of legal proceedings in smaller jurisdictions. Kaitlin finds that this environment fosters a more collaborative and approachable legal process, allowing her to resolve cases efficiently and effectively. She values the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in these communities, where her work directly contributes to the lives of the people she serves.

Background and Affiliations

Kaitlin, a Wichita, KS native, discovered her passion for law during a First Amendment class in college. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature, with a minor in Communication, from Wichita State University in 2007, followed by her Juris Doctor from Oklahoma City University School of Law in 2010. Kaitlin is an active member of the Wichita Bar Association, Wichita Women Attorneys Association, and Kansas Bar Association.

In addition to her other practice areas, she serves as the Drug Court Defense Attorney for Harvey County, a role she finds incredibly rewarding as it allows her to help individuals navigate the challenges of recovery within the legal system.

In her personal life, Kaitlin and her husband love living in Wichita with their family and enjoy exploring everything the city has to offer. They take pleasure in discovering local attractions, dining spots, and hidden gems around town.
